Disaster Recovery

The days of asking ‘do I need a IT disaster recovery plan’ are unfortunately a thing of the past. With the reliance on IT services continuing to increase in almost every organisation and now with the convergence of voice services towards the IT infrastructure, most organisations cannot risk not planning and implementing a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy.

Disaster recovery must take into account how a business is run and the different elements required to keep the business going. These needs vary from business to business, and a good disaster recovery plan should be designed for the individual business's needs.

What is a disaster?
This is a fundamental question when addressing the design of a comprehensive disaster recovery solution. For many individuals a disaster conjures images of a building amid towering flames, or as has been in more recent times some form of terrorist attack. For others a disaster may be the damage caused by a malicious virus attack or the sudden and catastrophic loss of data on a core server or hard disk. Whatever we deem a disaster the result is the same; the inability for the organisation and its staff to access key systems to perform their daily functions.
